DEATH Poetry Reading: I Want You Perfect, by Doniell Cushman

POEM:

I, a Juliet of sorts
desire nothing more than to
stab myself
as I lay beside you
my pooling blood to bathe you
and purify what was once innocent
becoming whole and free yet again

But for you to look upon me
would cause me more agony than that of a jagged blade
My Romeo, close your eyes
in sweet death’s pose
and pray for me for as I go
into disgrace by my maker
You can be whole and free once more

To the east, a Juliet
but soft, you are most fair
that blade and this blood
true beauty on this night
my sacrifice mistaken
quick poison was not so slight
your desire throbbing jests

Denying our fathers
this whelming has come to its peak
you, Romeo, did drink
Arranging you into a picture of lover’s boldness
I lie at your side
taking up your hand in mine
to rid the impurities, I die
