What was the last great American werewolf movie? If you answered, An American Werewolf in London, you win the prize. Its combination of reality, humor and absolute terror, hasn’t been matched. Instead the few werewolf movies that have been made have mostly been exercises in gore and heavy breathing. Vampire movies dominate the field and rightfully so. Horror movies dramatize the fear of an era—and ever since AIDS appeared, the ultimate fear has been exchanging bodily fluids with “the other”. Now with the triumph of self-centered meanness in our world, there is another beast ready to dominate our dreams—the werewolf. This myth doesn’t dramatize the beast in the other, but rather the beast within each of us.
